Newcastle United thrashes Tottenham Hotspur 6-1 in stunning Premier League upset

Newcastle United stunned Tottenham Hotspur with a 6-1 victory at St James’ Park on Sunday, with five goals coming in just 21 minutes of play. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe described the opening spell as “not often you have a start like that in a game, especially one of such importance.”

The result leaves Spurs on the brink of missing out on European football next season, with the club now in striking distance of Aston Villa, Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League table.
Newcastle, meanwhile, moved up to third in the league, with a six-point buffer and a game in hand over Spurs, putting the club in a strong position for their first qualification for the Champions League in two decades.

The victory was a remarkable contrast to the last time the two sides met, when Spurs won 3-0, a result that played a part in the departure of former Newcastle manager Steve Bruce.
