Elon Musk Sparks Controversy with Antisemitic Tweets Targeting George Soros: ADL Responds

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has accused Elon Musk, the second-richest person in the world, of using antisemitic stereotypes in his recent social media attack against billionaire George Soros. Musk compared Soros to a Jewish Holocaust survivor comic book villain, Magneto, and accused him of wanting to erode civilization and hating humanity. The ADL’s CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, and the CEO of the American Jewish Committee, Ted Deutch, criticized Musk’s remarks, stating that they perpetuated distressing and dangerous historical stereotypes against Jews.

The ADL warned that Musk’s prominent social media attack on Soros could further embolden extremists who spread anti-Jewish conspiracies and have previously targeted Soros and Jewish communities. Soros, known for his progressive and Democratic donations, has faced an assassination attempt in the past and has been the subject of attacks from far-right figures who propagate stereotypes about Jews’ influence on global politics and business.

Musk rejected the accusation of using antisemitic tropes and suggested that the ADL should change its name. He did not respond to requests for comment. Musk’s net worth is estimated at $176 billion, while Soros is worth $6.7 billion.

Surprisingly, according to the FBI, anti-Jewish attacks accounted for a significant portion of hate crimes in the United States in 2021, despite Jews making up only 2.4% of the population.

Soros, born in Hungary in 1930, gained fame for profiting from shorting the British pound in 1992. He has donated billions to his philanthropic group and Democratic causes. Recently, Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have targeted Soros due to his donations to a PAC supporting a Manhattan prosecutor who is investigating Trump.
