Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced founder of Theranos, has responded to the news of Amanda Seyfried playing her in the upcoming Hulu limited series “The Dropout.” In a statement to Variety, Holmes said she was “deeply disappointed” that the producers didn’t reach out to her or her team for input.
Holmes, who is currently facing criminal charges for fraud, claimed that the series will not accurately portray her or the events surrounding the downfall of Theranos. She stated that the show would be “entertainment” rather than a factual account of the events.
“The Dropout,” based on the podcast of the same name, will explore the rise and fall of Theranos, a blood-testing company that claimed to revolutionize the medical industry. However, the company’s technology was later revealed to be flawed, and Holmes and her former partner, Sunny Balwani, were charged with multiple counts of fraud.
The series will feature an all-star cast, including Seyfried as Holmes, Naveen Andrews as Balwani, and William H. Macy as Theranos investor Don Lucas. It is set to premiere on Hulu in late 2023.
The reaction from Holmes has sparked discussion among those following the case and the upcoming series, with many questioning the accuracy of the portrayal and the ethics of using a real-life figure as entertainment.
